Rowdies Notes
The Tampa Bay Rowdies were kept off the scoresheet for just the second time all season Wednesday night, falling 1-0 to the Rochester Rhinos in upstate New York. It was a poor performance for the Rowdies, who managed just one shot on target all night.
Rochester’s goal came on one of two shots on target the Rhinos had. Wal Fall took a shot off a corner kick that was saved by Tampa Bay goalkeeper Matt Pickens, but Fall pounced on the rebound and scored to put Rochester ahead and doom the Rowdies to defeat.
Tampa Bay center back Damion Lowe received his fifth yellow card of the season in the loss, triggering an automatic one-game suspension for accumulation, which will be served tonight. Lowe has played all 1,080 minutes of the season so far in USL and Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup play, but won’t be able to participate against Saint Louis FC.
Midfielder Joe Cole was held out of the squad against the Rhinos, but figures to return for tonight’s match. Fellow midfielder Justin Chavez will miss his second-straight match with a toe injury suffered last Friday in Toronto.
This match comes in a congested portion of the Rowdies’ schedule. It is Tampa Bay’s fifth game in 15 days. The Rowdies won all of the first three matches by a combined score of 8-1 before losing in Rochester on Wednesday night.
Scouting Saint Louis
Saint Louis FC is under new management this season in the form of former Sacramento Republic FC Head Coach Preki, who took charge this offseason after a sojourn away from coaching. Saint Louis FC competed in the Western Conference last season and finished in 14th place of 15 teams.
The team includes Palm Harbor native and former USF standout Wesley Charpie, who will get to play in front of friends and family in this match. Charpie has three assists this season to lead the team. In the scoring department, Saint Louis is led by Christian Volesky and Jose Angulo, who have three goals apiece.
Saint Louis has played three fewer games than the Rowdies this season and hasn’t played since a 4-3 win over the NPSL’s FC Wichita in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup play on May 17.
