ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (March 5, 2020) – For the first time in 11 years, Evan Louro is not a member of the New York Red Bulls.

Tampa Bay’s new goalkeeper made the well-trodden journey from New Jersey to sunny St. Petersburg this winter, signing with the Rowdies after 11 years in the Red Bulls system having initially joined the academy as a 13-year-old. Louro is 24 years old, so the Red Bulls chapter represents nearly half his life.

If you think that’ll have Louro feeling sentimental when he steps on the field for the first game with new club, which just happens to be against his old club, think again.

“I’m a different type,” Louro said this week. “I hate everybody the same. If they’re not on my team, I don’t have time for them. I’m trying to not look at it as anything different. I’m not there anymore. I’m part of the Rowdies and they’re just an opponent to me. I’ll have a lot of family at the game and that part’s cool, but I’m not going to feel any different on the field. I was there for 11 years, so it’s going to be a little weird but I think once warmups end and the whistle blows, it’s just another game.”

Red Bull may give you wings, but now that he’s out of the Red Bulls system, it’s time for Louro to spread his wings.

After each of the last two seasons, Tampa Bay’s starting goalkeeper has moved on to Major League Soccer. In 2018, Daniel Vega left the Rowdies to sign with the San Jose Earthquakes, where he went on to start all 34 matches last season. In 2019, John McCarthy departed to sign with Inter Miami CF for its inaugural MLS season.

Louro hopes to be the next netminder to find success in Tampa Bay.

“Who wouldn’t want to come here,” Louro asked, motioning toward a sun-drenched Al Lang Stadium. “Recently, I think the Rowdies have trended away from signing the more established, elder statesmen type players and they’re making that turn toward getting younger, hungrier players that want to prove themselves. It’s something players like me want to be a part of.”

Louro’s switch to the Rowdies, along with center back Jordan Scarlett, should add some spice to a match that already looked to be one of the most intriguing on the opening weekend slate of USL Championship action. The teams have a history of heated matches against one another, including a 2017 USL Championship Playoffs match in which Louro made six saves to eliminate the Rowdies.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (March 5, 2020) — After a long offseason, the USL Championship is finally back as the 2020 season kicks off Friday night. 

The Rowdies will make their debut Saturday afternoon in New Jersey in one of the most anticipated matches of opening weekend. 

Here’s a look at some of the best matches taking place around the Eastern Conference.

New York Red Bulls II vs. Tampa Bay Rowdies
Saturday, 3 p.m. | ESPN+
New York is full of mystery with just nine players listed on its website roster with less than 48 hours to kickoff. The Red Bulls finished in sixth last season, just one point below the Rowdies last season.

Tampa Bay heads into the 2020 season with a totally rebuilt backline and plenty of fresh faces. Evan Louro and Jordan Scarlett could make their Rowdies debuts against their former club.

North Carolina FC vs. Louisville City FC
Saturday, 2:30 p.m. | ESPN+
North Carolina surprised Louisville City FC with a 4-1 loss on opening day. NCFC went on to finish in 7th place in the Eastern Conference, but was bounced out in the first round of the playoffs.

Louisville City surged up the table late in the regular season to finish in fourth place before marching through the USL Championship Playoffs to win its fourth-consecutive Eastern Conference crown. 

Saint Louis FC vs. Miami FC
Saturday, 8 p.m. | ESPN+
Saint Louis was the first team left out of the playoff field last season and returns for 2020 with a new head coach in Steve Trittschuh.

Miami FC was a surprise addition to the USL Championship in December and makes its league debut on the road before hosting the Rowdies in week two.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (March 4, 2020) — The 2020 USL Championship season is now just three days away and it’s time to take a closer look at each position group on the Tampa Bay Rowdies revamped roster. Today’s edition features a closer look at the forwards.

Previous editions: Goalkeepers | Defenders | Midfielders

The forward group is small, with four senior players and Landon Ameres on a USL Academy contract, but the competition to be one of two starters in Head Coach Neill Collins’ 3-5-2 system is perhaps closer than any other spot on the field.

Leaving aside Landon Ameres, who is more likely to be a regular with the Rowdies U23s in League Two this summer, all four forwards look to be viable candidates to start regularly, so it will be a question of which forwards can take their chances and build momentum to stay in the team week to week.

Sebastian Guenzatti looks like a lock to start on opening day, coming off a season in which he finished tied for third in the USL Championship Golden Boot race with a Modern Era Rowdies record 18 goals in the regular season, plus one more in the USL Championship Playoffs.

If you assume Guenzatti will start Saturday night against the New York Red Bulls II, the big question becomes who will get the first shot at partnering with Guenzatti in the attack.

Juan Tejada scored 10 goals in his first professional season last year and scored the final goal of Tampa Bay’s preseason schedule last weekend against the USF Bulls. Lucky Mkosana was acquired via trade midway through last season and also scored 10 combined goals in 2019 for Louisville City FC and the Rowdies. New signing Kyle Murphy was Loudoun United FC’s leading scorer last season with 13 goals.

The four senior forwards on Tampa Bay’s roster scored a combined 52 goals in USL Championship play last season, giving Collins plenty of confidence ahead of the new season. Those 52 goals are more than 18 teams scored last season, exactly half the league.

“People have said to me, ‘Good luck picking the team this year,'” Collins said. “This is one of the areas where it will be the hardest. Last year we started with Sebastian and Juan, who were both really, really effective. We struggled with goals off the bench and with competition, so we were delighted to bring in Lucky and he’s shown why we’ve brought him in. Then you add in Kyle and it’s a spectacular group. If we can get 52 goals from them again this year, we’ll have a very successful season. There’s no shortage of goals from these guys and no shortage of work ethic either. All four guys work hard for the team and they’re all super fit and fast. That’s one of the most exciting areas of the team.”

Landon Ameres

Youth Club: Chargers SC

Age: 17

Ameres signed a USL Academy Contract with the Rowdies on February 26. He played in a handful of preseason matches, including cameos against Orlando City SC and Inter Miami CF.

Sebastian Guenzatti

Number: 13

Previous Club: New York Cosmos

Age: 28

Guenzatti scored twice this preseason, helping the Rowdies to a 2-1 win over the Montreal Impact with a brace. His 19 goals last season make him a likely starter once again to begin this season.

Lucky Mkosana

Number: 77

Previous Club: Louisville City FC

Age: 32

Mkosana netted two goals this preseason, scoring against the Chivas Florida U23s and South Georgia Tormenta. He scored six goals for Tampa Bay in 18 matches last season, plus four goals in 15 matches for Louisville City FC.

Kyle Murphy

Number: 27

Previous Club: Loudoun United FC

Age: 27

Murphy arrived on the scene with a bang this preseason, scoring in each of Tampa Bay’s first three matches, including a stunning finish against Orlando City SC.

Juan Tejada

Number: 17

Previous Club: Lakeland Tropics

Age: 23

Tejada scored just once this preseason, but it was a show-stopper in added time to help the Rowdies close their schedule with a 1-1 draw against the USF Bulls last week.

(March 3, 2020) — With the regular season set to start this weekend, it’s time to take a closer look at each position group on the Tampa Bay Rowdies revamped roster for the 2020 USL Championship season. So far, we’ve looked at goalkeepers and defenders and now it’s time to focus on the midfield.

When looking at the options Rowdies Head Coach and Technical Director Neill Collins has at his disposal in the midfield. It seems likely that the Rowdies will primarily play with a 3-5-2 formation again this season, so it makes sense to split the group into wing backs and central midfielders. 

At wing back, the competition on the right side looks intense between returning starter Malik Johnson and newcomer Mustapha Dumbuya, with Juan Tejada also playing some minutes in that position both in 2019 and in preseason this year. 

Similarly on the left side, it looks like returning starter Leo Fernandes looks set to enter the season as the starter, but with competition from newcomer Sebastian Dalgaard. Max Lachowecki could also be an option in that position. 

“Wing backs was one of the biggest positions we wanted to strengthen this offseason,” Collins said. “We felt last year that when we had all our wing backs fit and firing, we were really hard for opponents to match up against, but when they were out, we really lacked depth. Mustapha and Sebastian give us really like-for-like replacements for Malik and Leo. Sebastian can go one-on-one against anyone, like Malik and Leo, and Mustapha has shown his pedigree this preseason. He’s got great ability to penetrate with his pace, but he’s equally strong defensively with his positioning and experience. We like attacking wing backs and we’ve got them. We can’t expect any of those players to play every single game, so we need to have options to vary things week to week.”

In the center of the park, it comes down to how Collins wants to set up the triangle in each match against each opponent. In most matches, it seems likely to see a holding midfielder paired with a deep-lying playmaker at the base of the midfield, behind an attacking midfielder.

Against certain opposition and with certain gameplans, that can change to one holder and two attacking midfielders or two outright holding midfielders with more of a box-to-box midfielder ahead of them.  

Along with a returning cast of Dom Oduro, Jordan Doherty, Yann Ekra and Zach Steinberger, the central midfield has been supplemented with the signings of Lewis Hilton and Kevin Mendoza, plus Hayden Morgan and Julio Plata on USL Academy contracts.

“I think the midfield was one of our biggest strengths last year,” Collins said. “Dom, Yann, Jordan and Zach all contributed well at different times last year. I think Lewis makes us even stronger and gives us something we didn’t have last year because he’s deadly on set pieces. We’ve actually managed to make that area stronger. Kevin Mendoza played for our Under 23s and he’s capable of scoring goals from the No. 10 position. Zach can score goals as well so there’s a lot of competition in there.”

Sebastian Dalgaard

Number: 23

Previous Club: Hartford Athletic

Age: 28

Dalgaard is in the rotation at either wing back spot, though he mostly played on the left side this preseason. He played more than 2,000 minutes and started 24 Championship matches in 2019. Dalgaard exited the final preseason match with a knock but shouldn’t miss much time.

Jordan Doherty

Number: 22

Previous Club: Sheffield United FC

Age: 19

Jordan Doherty signed with the Rowdies on a permanent basis this offseason after spending last year with Tampa Bay on loan from Sheffield United FC. In 2019, he became one of the youngest players to play for the Rowdies in either era. He’ll play the bulk of his minutes as a defensive midfielder. 

Yann Ekra

Number: 7

Previous Club: Charlotte Independence

Age: 29

Ekra was limited to about 1,000 minutes in 2019 due to injury, but looked to be one of the most dominant physical threats on the roster. A box-to-box midfielder, Ekra is a dynamic option as a deep-lying playmaker or in a more advanced role. 

Leo Fernandes

Number: 11

Previous Club: Philadelphia Union

Age: 28

Fernandes heads into the season as the projected starter in the left wing back spot. In 2019, his 10 assists made the first double-digit assister for the Rowdies since Marcel Schafer’s 11 in 2017. If he stays healthy and in the lineup, Fernandes has a chance to reach 100 appearances for Tampa Bay at the end of the year.

Lewis Hilton

Number: 4

Previous Club: Saint Louis FC

Age: 26

Hilton was the first new addition signed by the Rowdies this season and projects as a starter in the center of the midfield. With Saint Louis, he played nearly every match of the last two seasons. He’s spent much of this preseason in one of the deep-lying spots paired with Dom Oduro but with freedom to get forward in possession. 

Malik Johnson

Number: 14

Previous Club: Toronto FC II

Age: 21

Due to a preseason shoulder injury in 2019, Johnson didn’t make his Rowdies debut until May of last year but proved to be a vital component of Tampa Bay’s attack. He scored three goals and provided eight assists from the right wing back spot. Johnson hasn’t played much this preseason due to an injury, but he’s not expected to miss much time.

Kevin Mendoza

Number: 10

Previous Club: Veracruz

Age: 26

Mendoza is new to the Rowdies first team, but not new to the club. He spent 2017 with the Rowdies U23s in USL League Two, scoring eight goals and adding eight assists in just 11 matches. Mendoza is the rotation as an out-and-out attacking midfielder.

Hayden Morgan

Number: 26

Youth Club: Tampa Bay United

Age: 16

Morgan signed a USL Academy contract with the Rowdies on February 26. He featured in a couple of preseason matches for Tampa Bay this preseason as deep-lying central midfielder. 

Dom Oduro

Number: 18

Previous Club: FC Golden State Force

Age: 25

Oduro has been a staple of the Rowdies midfield since signing from League Two side FC Golden State Force midway through the 2018 season. Oduro projects to once again be a starter as Collins’ first-choice defensive midfielder.

Julio Plata

Number: 28

Youth Club: Tampa Bay United

Age: 16

Plata signed a USL Academy contract with the Rowdies on February 26. He appeared just once with the first time this preseason, playing in a closed-door match against the Chivas Florida U23s on February 1. Plata plays as an attacking midfielder.

Zach Steinberger

Number: 8

Previous Club: North Carolina FC (on loan from Indy Eleven)

Age: 27

Steinberger scored three goals and added two assists in league play last season, plus another goal and four assists in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup play. This preseason, Steinberger has played mostly with the first unit as the first-choice No. 10.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (March 3, 2020) – The Rowdies Women will play three of their four regular season home games on weekends at Al Lang Stadium, with the schedule for their inaugural WPSL season now confirmed.

The Rowdies Women will open their campaign at home on Sunday, May 24 against Florida Sol FC before departing for a three-game road trip. The team will then play three consecutive home games in an eight-day stretch before closing the regular season on the road against Florida Gulf Coast Dutch Lions.

The WPSL regular season runs from May 24 to June 26 with national playoffs to follow.

All Rowdies Women home matches will be played at Al Lang Stadium with free admission to all fans.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (March 2, 2020) — With the regular season set to start this weekend, it’s time to take a closer look at each position group on the Tampa Bay Rowdies revamped roster for the 2020 USL Championship season. We started with goalkeepers last Friday and we’ll take a look at defenders today.

Previous editions: Goalkeepers

No area on the Rowdies roster is less certain heading into 2020 than defenders. After a scorching start to the season last year, Tampa Bay kept only two clean sheets in the final 17 games of the season. The end result was that no defender from the 2019 roster was retained and Head Coach and Technical Director Neill Collins embarked on a total rebuild this offseason.

The result is a set of five versatile centerbacks, supplemented by Obafemi Awodesu on a USL Academy contract, that is expected form the basis of a powerful and potentially dominant back three. Mustapha Dumbuya is rostered as a defender, but he’ll be included with the wingback group in tomorrow’s report on midfielders.

Throughout preseason, most of the minutes in the back three went to Louis Lomas (on loan from Norwich City FC), Forrest Lasso and Aaron Guillen. Lasso and Guillen signed with the Rowdies this winter from FC Cincinnati and North Carolina FC, respectively.

“When you look at defenders, continuity is always important,” Collins said. “We don’t have that continuity from last year, but I think we’re trying to get these guys as many minutes as possible to build relationships. They’re learning a different system because we play with a back three, but I think anyone that watched the preseason games will agree that we’ve looked strong in that department.”

Obafemi Awodesu

Number: 2

Youth Club: Chargers SC

Age: 18

Awodesu signed a USL Academy contract with the Tampa Bay Rowdies on February 26 after featuring for the Rowdies in a handful of preseason contests. Awodesu plays his club soccer for Chargers SC. He was previously a member of the Philadelphia Union youth system.

Aaron Guillen

Number: 33

Previous Club: North Carolina FC

Age: 26

Guillen has played plenty of minutes this preseason as the left-sided center back in the back three, with Forrest Lasso to his inside and a wing back to his outside. He played nearly 3,000 minutes last season with North Carolina, so he should be a reliable option.

Max Lachowecki

Number: 16

Previous Club: Tampa Bay Rowdies (2018)

Age: 27

Lachowecki is back with the Rowdies after taking a hiatus from professional soccer in 2019. Collins invited him to preseason camp as a trialist and he earned a contract. Has played his preseason minutes as a left-sided center back, but could theoretically be a depth option at wing back as well.

Forrest Lasso

Number: 3

Previous Club: Nashville SC (on loan from FC Cincinnati)

Age: 26

Lasso has eaten the majority of minutes this preseason as the central defender in a three-man back line. He has earned a spot in the USL Best XI three times in three years with three different teams. While he’s shown some disciplinary issues in preseason, Lasso has only been ejected twice in more than 100 career professional matches.

Louis Lomas

Number: 15

Previous Club: On loan from Norwich City FC

Age: 19

Lomas joined the Rowdies on loan from Norwich City FC this winter and is now set for his professional debut. He has played mostly as the right-sided defender in the back three, but also featured as a right wing back against USF last week.

Jordan Scarlett

Number: 5

Previous Club: New York Red Bulls II

Age: 24

Jordan Scarlett has had a limited impact this preseason as he tended to a minor injury, but he did start last week against USF and played 71 minutes, signalling that he should be in the mix for Saturday’s season opener. He played as a right-sided center back in that match.

TAMPA, Fla. (February 28, 2020) — Tampa Bay Rowdies forward Juan Tejada scored in stoppage time to help the 10-man Rowdies to a 1-1 draw in their preseason finale against the University of South Florida Bulls on Friday night.

The Rowdies trailed for most of the game after USF Adrian Billhardt scored in the 25th minute. Tejada scored in the second minute of added time after Lucky Mkosana nodded on a long ball forward from goalkeeper Evan Louro.

Rowdies Head Coach and Technical Director Neill Collins used 19 different players on the night, giving as much of his roster as possible a final workout before the start of the USL Championship regular season next weekend in New Jersey.

“We’ll find out next Saturday (how ready we are for the regular season,)’ Collins said. “Preseason has been good in many respects, but the tests start now. This is when you start judging the players. There have been many positives, but there’s also been some things that haven’t gone as we’d like them, just like a real season.”

The Rowdies sputtered offensively in the first half and took a bad break in the 66th minute when Forrest Lasso was shown his second yellow card of the second half and sent off. Tampa Bay would play the final 30 minutes down a man.

USF nearly doubled its lead in the 70th minute when Victor Claudel took a shot on target from inside the six-yard out, only for Louro to make a spectacular save with his left hand while falling to his right.

“There’s a reason that we’ve kept this game on the schedule (year after year),” Collins said. “It’s a real good test. We’ve got a great relationship with the coaching staff here. I thought (the Bulls) were excellent tonight. I thought they were the better team. You can see how well coached they are. You can see that they have talented players that will go on to have professional careers.”

Despite the man disadvantage, the Rowdies closed the match on the front foot, with Tejada forcing a great save from USF’s goalkeeper in the 76th minute.

The match went into stoppage time with the Rowdies still behind, but Tejada’s individual effort to tie the match after beating his defender and rounding the goalkeeper to close preseason with a bang.

“That goal is everything we know about Juan,” Collins said. “Juan had an excellent season and at the end it tailed off a little bit because he had put his body through so much to get in that position. Now he’s back, he’s fit and he’s ready and he’s a huge part of what we’re trying to do here. We played with 10 men for the last 30 minutes and the boys found a way to get their equalizer. Was it deserved? Possibly not, but that’s a positive from tonight.”

Now, the Rowdies turn their sights from the Bulls to the Red Bulls. Tampa Bay opens its 2020 campaign Saturday, March 7 at MSU Soccer Park in Montclair, New Jersey. The Rowdies will then visit Miami FC on March 13 before hosting North Carolina FC in their home opener at Al Lang Stadium on Saturday, March 21.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (February 28, 2020) — With the regular season set to start week, it’s time to take a closer look at each position group on the Tampa Bay Rowdies revamped roster for the 2020 USL Championship season, starting with goalkeepers.

Macklin Robinson is the one holdover from last year’s goalkeeper group, with John McCarthy and Chris Konopka departing the club.

McCarthy was the primary starter last season, with Robinson starting just five matches in USL Championship play. In his limited starts, Robinson made his fair share of highlight reel saves and posted one clean sheet.

In for this season are Evan Louro and Ian McGrane, who project to be the starter and third goalkeeper, respectively. Louro has eaten up most of the minutes this preseason and featured against Orlando City SC, the Montreal Impact and Inter Miami CF, the three hardest tests on Tampa Bay’s preseason schedule. 

“We’ve got three guys all competing for one position, which is always tough,” Rowdies Head Coach and Technical Director Neill Collins said. “I think, right now, Evan, with his experience and with his performances in preseason and last year, heads into the season as our No. 1. … We saw last year when John got hurt, Macklin is more than ready to step in.”

“Their goalkeeper was their best player on the pitch,” Rowdies midfielder Joe Cole said that night.

At just 24 years of age, Louro arrives in St. Petersburg with 79 starts in USL Championship play, but now finds himself playing for a new club.

Tampa Bay’s other newcomer between the sticks is Ian McGrane, also 24 years old. McGrane split last season between AFC Ann Arbor in the NPSL and Stumptown Athletic in NISA. While he hasn’t played many games professionally, he has all the tools for a successful career.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (February 26, 2020) — Four of the brightest soccer prospects in Tampa Bay have signed USL Academy contracts with the Tampa Bay Rowdies, making them available to play with the Rowdies first team at any point during the Rowdies first team during the 2020 USL Championship campaign. The contracts are pending federation approval.

Landon Ameres, Obafemi Awodesu, Hayden Morgan and Julio Plata are now eligible to play for the Rowdies first team, but they are expected to feature primarily for the Rowdies U23 side in the upcoming USL League Two season. Morgan and Plata play for the Tampa Bay United Rowdies Academy, while Ameres and Awodesu play for Chargers SC.

USL Academy contracts allow youth players to train and play within a professional environment while retaining their amateur status with the NCAA. All four players have played with the Rowdies in matches this preseason.

“I’m delighted to put four new players on USL Academy contracts,” Rowdies Head Coach and Technical Director Neill Collins said. “Each of them has their own strengths and it’s important that we show the elite youth players here in Tampa Bay that we’ll provide an opportunity for them. They’ve already shown this preseason their value to our squad and I’m looking forward to working with them to help make them better. It’s going to be a great experience for them and I’d like to give credit to our senior players for looking after them already and helping them settle in.”

Awodesu, born in 2001, is a defender that came up in the Philadelphia Union system before joining the Chargers last year. He has primarily played as the right-sided centerback in matches with the Rowdies first team this month.

Ameres, born in 2002, is a forward that originally joined the Chargers SC in 2015. He spent 2018 in the Atlanta United FC Academy before returning to Tampa Bay and re-joining the Chargers. Ameres has been called up to the United States National Team at both the U15 and U17 levels.

“The Chargers Soccer Club are extremely pleased and excited for Landon Ameres and Femi Awodesu as they agree to the USL Academy Player contract with the Tampa Bay Rowdies,” Chargers Director of Operations Jim DiNobile said. “Landon, Femi and their families have demonstrated the highest standard of qualities to put themselves in this position of opportunity.

We are very confident that with the Rowdies their development will surely continue and demonstrate the high level of young player talent in our Tampa Bay soccer community!”

Morgan, born in 2004, is a central midfielder that currently plays for the TBU Rowdies U17s. He joined TBU in 2016 as a 12-year old. He played for the Chargers in 2018 before returning to TBU.

Plata, born in 2003, is also a central midfielder that plays for the TBU Rowdies U17s.

Both Morgan and Plata helped the Tampa Bay United Rowdies Academy to a perfect three wins in three games earlier this month at the USL Academy Eastern Conference Event.

“As a club, program, and staff, we are truly proud and happy for Hayden, Julio, and their families,” said Anthony Latronica, Tampa Bay United Rowdies Sporting Director Anthony Latronica. “These young men have shown the ability on the field to play with the first team as well as the maturity it takes to step into their environment and be a part of the locker room. This a tremendous opportunity to sign Academy Contracts with the Tampa Bay Rowdies and we are all very thankful.”

All four players have been placed on Tampa Bay’s first team roster for 2020. Awodesu will wear No. 2, Ameres will wear No. 27, Morgan will wear No. 26 and Plata will wear No. 28.

Last year, the Rowdies signed Robbie Soronellas, Jack Casey and Dan Wintermeier to USL Academy contracts. Soronellas and Casey appeared for the first team in a 4-1 victory over The Villages SC in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Soronellas was later named to the bench in a league match against the Charleston Battery but did not appear. Soronellas and Wintermeier are both expected to play with the Rowdies U23s this summer.
